Quality assurance (QA) is a key component to maximizing the reliable service life of FRP equipment.
A comprehensive Quality Assurance Program begins in the design phase. Specifications should be reviewed for definition of construction materials, methods of construction, design conditions, engineering and installation requirements. Applicable codes and standards can be confusing. Codes and standards should be well defined for the equipment or application.

Depending on the project demands FRP shop inspections may vary from a final acceptance inspection to a shop audit to continuous FRP shop surveillance. At the beginning of a project a shop audit may be conducted to examine a fabricator’s quality control program, review laminator certifications and fabrication practices. Where the project is sizable and equipment reliability is critical continuous shop surveillance during fabrication has great value.

During construction, FRP systems and equipment may be assembled by local labor.The labor, possibly local craft, may have very limited lamination experience and without a certified training program. On site, quality assurance inspection during construction helps to educate the installation group on good lamination practices and to verify and document quality control activities and practices.
